Should you notice your lights flickering, you need to determine the cause. Sometimes it is just as simple as tightening the bulb or replacing the bulb. Other times, the repair is not that simple and you will need to call your electrician.
Flickering Lights are Clues
Watch the flickering lights. Do they suddenly dim and then get brighter or do they seem to momentarily brighten and then dim. Being able to tell your electrician this will help in troubleshooting the problem. It could be a loose connection at the circuit breaker box or a faulty connection somewhere else. It could be the wires don’t have proper ground or neutral. Watching how the lights flicker will help determine the problem.
Many times lights flickering are caused by circuit overload in the building. This often happens when motors are turned on. Anything from a washing machine to your neighbors septic tank. Watch to see if they flicker when other items are turned on causing too much electricity to be drawn at the same time? This can be a problem, as you don’t want to blow a fuse or overload an appliance. Surges and spikes in electricity can also cause lights to flicker.
Faulty Dimmer Switch
Another common problem is a faulty dimmer switch at the wall. These can cause your lights to dim and brighten. It could be the switch needs to be replaced or the wiring is loose. Many times these switches are not rated for the correct load being used. Installing the proper switch can fix this problem and reduce fire safety hazards.
