3 Reasons Your Lights May Be Flickering in Walton, KY

We all know how irritating it can be when your lights just won’t stop flickering. You may ask yourself why they won’t stop. We are here to help you figure out what may be the cause of your flickering lights and offer advice on how to solve the issue. Read on for 3 reasons you lights may be flickering.

Oftentimes, flickering may not be all that big of an issue, but since there are so many causes for flickering, it can be important to figure out what is causing yours to determine if it’s worth the worry or not.

Whether you have fluorescent or LED bulbs, sometimes flickering can be totally normal. In fluorescent bulbs, it is common for them to flicker for a few minutes when the light is first turned on. This is because the phosphors are just trying to reach peak illumination. For LED bulbs, it is possible that they are improperly connected to their driver. Neither of these are all that worrisome, but you may want to replace them if you get too annoyed by the flickering.

Loose bulbs or faulty light switches are also causes of flickering lights that don’t require you to freak out. To fix a loose bulb, all you have to do is make sure the light is switched off and then grasp and tighten it. Easy! For faulty light switches, just toggle your light switch on and off a few times. If this solves your issue, you have found the correct solution. If there is still more flickering, you may need to keep looking for the problem. Contact us for help if you can’t seem to figure out where the problem lies.

Some issues that may require you to call your electrician include things like voltage fluctuation and loose wiring. To check for voltage fluctuation, you can turn on an appliance that requires high wattage and see if lights flicker after that. You can check the voltage in your home with a device called a voltmeter. Your voltage should be between 115 and 125 volts. Loose wiring is a very serious issue and is one of the most common causes of house fires and is not an uncommon reason for lights to flicker. Shut off the light at the circuit breaker before you remove the fixture and then remove it and check the wiring. If it looks even slightly loose or insecure, you should definitely call an electrician to come take a look.
